The motorcycle was cutting in and out of traffic and running through various intersections with no care for safety.

As the motorcycle approached Lansdowne Avenue at Wellington Street, at an extremely high rate of speed, a vehicle which had just completed its left hand turn from Lansdowne Avenue to head westbound on Wellington Street was struck from behind by the motorcycle. The motorcycle driver then attempt to contact a cab at a local school but fortunately individuals in the area flagged down a police officer who was searching for the suspect from the collision and the suspect was arrested without any further incident.

The driver of the motor vehicle, that was rear ended, didn’t not sustain any significant injuries.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 24 year old man from Sarnia, was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident, breach of probation, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The accused was also charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 due to the fact that the motorcycle was stolen. The accused remains in custody awaiting his bail hearing.

Broadcast time: 12:45 pm

Date: October 17, 2016

On October 11, 2016, at approximately 9:30 pm, the theft of cigarettes from a gas bar located on London Line in the City of Sarnia took place. The accused requested the merchandise and once it was turned over the suspect appeared as if he was about to pay but immediately fled the gas bar with the smokes in hand never completing the transaction. This incident was caught on video surveillance and reported to the Sarnia Police Service.

Next, on October 13, 2016, also at approximately 9:30 pm, the same suspect re-attended the same gas bar but this time selected some other products and when he attended the till asked for cigarettes. The cashier recognized the suspect and told the suspect this. From there the two began to argue verbally which then escalated to the suspect coming around the counter and attempting to grab a quantity of cigarettes from the display case. The confrontation then became physical as the cashier attempted to stop the suspect from stealing more cigarettes.

The suspect struck the cashier several times in the head with his fist and then proceeded to grab a number of cigarette packs. As the suspect left the store he told the cashier not to follow and that he had a handgun. A gun was never seen during the entire interaction.

Shortly thereafter members of the Sarnia Police Service attended the area and were able to locate the suspect. The suspect was arrested without incident a short distance away and no handgun was ever located. After searching the area, officers were also able to locate some of the cigarettes that the suspect stole.

Currently, Zakariye Mohamed of Toronto remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. He is facing charges of theft under $5000 and robbery with violence.

Broadcast time: 11:35 am

Date: October 20, 2016

On October 19, 2016 at approximately 12:00 pm, the Sarnia Police Service received a complaint that a white pickup truck was travelling westbound on London Line in a dangerous manner. The vehicle was observed all over the road and passing vehicles on the right hand side. Unfortunately when officers attended the area the vehicle could not be located.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the Sarnia Police Service received a report of a motor vehicle collision on Haight Lane. One of the vehicles involved in this collision matched the description of the pickup truck seen on London Line driving in a dangerous manner. The pickup truck struck another motor vehicle and then fled the scene. Fortunately the driver of the other vehicle involved was not injured.

This time witnesses were able to get a license plate and a description of the driver. Police continued to receive complaints regarding the pickup truck even after it left the scene. While officers attempted to locate this vehicle another officer attended the home address of the registered owner where the truck was now parked.

The officer observed that the owner was exiting his residence with a rag and a tin of Turtle Wax polish. The officer also observed that the pickup truck had damage consistent with the collision from Haight Lane. With all the information the officer had the suspect was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

A 57 year old man from Wyoming was subsequently released from custody on a promise to appear with a future court date of November 29, 2016.

“13” Halloween Safety Tips for 2016

Broadcast time: 3:55pm Date: October 27, 2016

SARNIA POLICE SERVICE “13” HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

1. HALLOWEEN CAN BE A CHILLY NIGHT SO MAKE SURE COSTUMES ARE LOOSE ENOUGH TO BE WORN OVER WARM CLOTHING. MAKE SURE CLOTHING IS NOT SO BAGGY OR LONG THAT TRICK OR TREATERS CAN TRIP OVER THEIR COSTUMES.

2. CHOOSE BRIGHTLY COLOURED CLOTHING THAT WILL BE CLEARLY VISIBLE TO MOTORISTS. FOR GREATER VISIBILITY, CARRY A FLASHLIGHT AND ADD REFLECTIVE TAPE TO THE COSTUME.

3. MAKE-UP AND FACE PAINT ARE BETTER THAN WEARING A MASK WHICH CAN RESTRICT BREATHING AND/OR VISION. IF YOU CHOOSE A MASK, MAKE SURE IT ALLOWS THE CHILD TO SEE AND BREATH EASILY.

4. SWORDS, KNIVES AND SIMILAR ACCESSORIES SHOULD BE MADE OF SOFT, FLEXIBLE MATERIAL.

5. LOOK FOR COSTUMES, BEARDS AND WIGS LABELLED “FLAME RESISTANT” NYLON OR HEAVY WEIGHT POLYESTER COSTUMES ARE BEST.  FLAME RESISTANT DOES NOT MEAN ‘FIRE PROOF’. AVOID COSTUMES WITH BAGGY SLEEVES OR FLOWING SKIRTS TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF CONTACT WITH CANDLES AND OTHER FIRE SOURCES.

6. CHILDREN TOO YOUNG TO TRICK-OR-TREAT CAN DRESS UP IN COSTUME AND HELP ANSWER THE DOOR WITH A PARENT NEARBY.

7. MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS. REMOVE ALL OBJECTS AROUND YOUR HOUSE THAT COULD CAUSE CHILDREN TO TRIP OR FALL. TURN YOUR OUTSIDE LIGHT ON SO CHILDREN WILL KNOW THEY CAN VISIT YOUR HOME.

8. KEEP CANDLES, JACK-O-LANTERNS, MATCHES AND LIGHTERS IN A PLACE THAT CHILDREN CANNOT REACH.

9. TELL YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO EAT ANY GOODIES UNTIL YOU SEE THEM. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD EATS DINNER OR A SNACK BEFORE THEY GO OUT, SO THEY’LL BE LESS TEMPTED TO EAT THEIR CANDY ALONG THE WAY.

10. CHILDREN SHOULD STAY IN WELL-LIT AREAS AND SHOULD ONLY VISIT HOMES THAT HAVE THEIR OUTSIDE LIGHTS ON. CHILDREN SHOULD NEVER GO INSIDE HOMES OR CARS. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE WITH A STRANGER.

11. CHILDREN SHOULD WALK, NOT RUN, FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE.  AVOID “ZIG-ZAGGING” BY STAYING ON THE SIDEWALK OR AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FACING TRAFFIC, CROSS THE ROAD AT THE CORNER AND LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE ROAD.

12. THE GOODIES ARE THE BEST PART OF HALLOWEEN! BUT BEFORE YOUR CHILDREN BEGIN TO EAT THEIR LOOT, MAKE SURE YOU EXAMINE IT FIRST. THROW OUT ANY TREATS THAT ARE NOT WRAPPED, THOSE IN TORN OR LOOSE PACKAGES, OR ANY THAT HAVE SMALL HOLES IN THE WRAPPERS.

13. INSPECT COMMERCIALLY WRAPPED TREATS FOR SIGNS OF TAMPERING, SUCH AS AN UNUSUAL APPEARANCE OR DISCOLOURATION, TINY PINHOLES, OR TEARS IN WRAPPERS. THROW AWAY ANYTHING THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUS. IF YOU FIND SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH, CONTACT THE POLICE.

Note:  The Sarnia Police Service has a limited number of reflective wristbands available at our front desk for anyone wishing to add a piece of reflective material to their costume.  They are free of charge and have been generously donated by The Community Safety Network.

Complainant Becomes Accused

Broadcast time: 12:35 pm

Date: October 31, 2016

On October 28, 2016, at approximately 6:00 pm, a member of the Sarnia Police Service was dispatched to the 700 block of Confederation Street in the City of Sarnia regarding the original complaint of a cyclist being hit by a motor vehicle backing out of the driveway.

While on route to the area the complainant, who was originally the cyclist, was driving away in a car and had flagged the officer down to speak to him. The complainant made a u-turn and came back to speak with the officer. As the complainant continued to speak with the officer it was noted that the complainant had the strong odour of alcohol coming from his breath.

At this point, the officer made a breath demand for a road side screening device to the complainant who had just been driving a vehicle. The road side test indicated a “fail” and thus the driver was arrested for over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. He was then transported to the station where he supplied samples of breath into the Intoxilyzer which indicated that he was just under twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. The accused, a 28 year old male from Sarnia, was held until he was sober and then released on a Promise to Appear with a court date of November 15, 2016.

The officer was also able to follow up on the initial complaint of the accused alleging that he was struck by a vehicle as it was backing out of the drive way. It was determined that no such collision occurred but rather the accused was upset with a vehicle that was in the process of backing out and had stopped before the sidewalk. The accused felt that the car was too close to the sidewalk and decided to begin yelling at the driver.
