Search Warrant Recovers Stolen Property

On October 27, 2016, members of the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigation Division along with members of the Vice Unit and COPPS Unit executed a Search Warrant in the 200 block of Russell Street South in the City of Sarnia. During the warrant numerous power tools, bicycles and lap tops were recovered.

A Tyler Rankin, 28 years of age, has been arrested and charged with break and enter, breach of undertaking, possession of a controlled substance, three counts of property obtained by crime under $5000, one count of property obtained by crime over $5000 and theft of a motor vehicle under $5000. A warrant has been requested for the arrest of Melissa Thomas, 37 years of age, for two counts of breach of probation, one count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of property obtained by crime over $5000 and two counts of property obtained by crime under $5000.

Some items have been returned to their rightful owners but a number of items have not.

You will be required to produce a serial number, specific markings or some away of identifying this property as being yours.

It’s Time Again to Trick or Treat

At this time we would like to remind everyone that the Sarnia Police Service will be out helping to keep a watchful eye on our Trick or Treaters and trying to keep them safe. Please drive slowly when in areas where our little ghosts and goblins are going door to door. Unfortunately they can be unpredictable in their actions.

Parents and children please remember to be careful crossing the road and paying attention to your surroundings. Wear reflective clothing and carry flashlights to ensure you can see and others can see you.

Siren Heard in Downtown Sarnia

At 10:33PM on this date, an alarm was activated from the 600 block of Christina Street. The siren could be heard in the downtown core.

Sarnia Police and Sarnia Fire were asked to respond to a fire at this location. The scene is contained and is still an ongoing matter. We will provide more updates when they are available.

Update: Siren Heard in Downtown Sarnia

Sarnia Police and Sarnia Fire were requested to stand by for a small fire commencing at approximately 10:25PM November 1st, 2016 at the 600 block of Christina Street South.

Emergency sirens from the manufacturing site were activated and could be heard in the downtown Sarnia core.

No impacts to air quality were detected at the manufacturing site.

On site personnel have extinguished the small fire at approximately 11:25pm November 1st.

CVECO 2016 SADS Exercise

On Thursday, November 3, 2016, numerous emergency response organizations will be involved in a large exercise on Indian Road, from approximately 8:30 am to noon.

Road barricades will be in place on Indian Road and Plank Road as well as Indian Road and Highway 40.

Only local traffic will be allowed access at Plank Road and Indian Road. This local traffic will only be allowed to travel up to Preferred Towing and no further. The section of Indian Road from Preferred Towing to Highway 40 (south of Preferred Towing) will be closed to all traffic and nothing will be allowed through.

Old Fashioned Police Work Pays Off

On November 8, 2016, at approximately 9:15 am, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit was on patrol when he observed a man that the officer knew was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

The suspect was on a bicycle and when the officer pulled up to the man and advised him he was under arrest the suspect began to flee. The individual disappeared from the officer’s sight for several minutes in the area of Stuart Street but fortunately the Constable’s persistence paid off and he was able locate the suspect. After a brief foot chase the accused was in custody without incident.

Upon being searched the officer located two syringes on the accused and several cards that were reported stolen.

Lewis Rising, 26 years of age, from Sarnia, faces charges for obstruct peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, and five counts of breach of probation.

He remains in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing.

Theft of a Motor Vehicle and Arrest of the Suspects Involved

On November 12, 2016 the Sarnia Police Service received a complaint of a stolen motor vehicle from a local Sarnia Fire Hall. A personal motor vehicle was stolen from the parking lot sometime over night. Shortly after the report was taken by the Sarnia Police Service a call was received of a motor vehicle collision in the 400 block of Lakeshore Road where a parked vehicle was struck by what was later determined to be the stolen motor vehicle.

A witness was able to describe both a driver and passenger who fled from the scene. An OPP K-9 was called in to attempt to locate the suspects but the track was unsuccessful. Through further investigation the two suspects were determined to be a 19 year old male and 18 year old male.

A warrant to search a local motel room was requested and in the early morning hours of November 14, 2016 the warrant was executed. During the execution of the warrant the 19 year old suspect was located and arrested in the motel room. Also located in the room was personal property taken from the stolen vehicle.

The 19 year old is currently in police custody and awaiting a bail hearing for the charges of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, three counts of breaching his recognizance, and one count of breach of probation. A warrant is being sought for the 18 year old male for the charge of theft of a motor vehicle.

Impaired Driver Strikes Hydro Pole

Date: November 14, 2016

On November 12, 2016, shortly after midnight, the Sarnia Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a hydro pole. The vehicle sustained extensive damage to the vehicle and snapping the pole.

As the officer spoke with the driver and continued his investigation it was determined the 18 year old male driver was impaired by alcohol. At this time, the driver was arrested for the impaired charge and subsequently transported to the Sarnia Police Station.

Upon arrival at the station a qualified breath technician conducted the Intoxilyzer test and it was determined that the driver had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

The accused now faces charges for care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and for over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. The accused was also charged with driving with no driver’s license. He is to attend court on December 20, 2016 for his first appearance.

Follow-up to Attempted Theft from Animal Farm

Date: November 15, 2016

On November 7, 2016, an individual attempted to steal Chase the goat from the Animal Farm located in Canatara Park. The goat was located within the Animal Farm but a yellow extension cord was found wrapped around its neck. The animal was not injured.

The investigation has continued and officers were able to determine from information received that the suspect was a young teenage male between the ages of 15-17 years old. He was short in stature with a medium build, short buzzed hair, and was wearing a green shirt and gray pants. The suspect was observed leaving the area on a medium sized gray bike after being confronted.

Suspect Attempts to Swallow Drugs

Date: November 17, 2016

On November 16, 2016 at approximately 10:00am a 30 year old female attended the Sarnia Police Service Headquarters to complain about a matter. The officers involved in the investigation dealt with the complainant at her vehicle parked outside the front doors of headquarters. The complainant was acting peculiar and did appear to appear under the influence of something. While speaking to the complainant the officer observed a clear plastic bag of what was believed to be methamphetamine in the vehicle. Before the officer could seize the suspected drugs the 30 year old female grabbed the bag and shoved it into her mouth. At this time the officer gained control of the female in an attempt to arrest her and also out of concern the female would ingest the drugs.

After a brief struggle the female did spit out the baggy that was partially chewed. Due to the fact that Police were worried that the suspect may have swallowed some of the suspected methamphetamine she was transported to hospital for observation.

The accused 30 year old female now faces charges for obstruct peace officer, possession of a controlled substance and for 3 counts of breaching an undertaking. The accused has been released from hospital and will be attending for a bail hearing this morning.

Variety Store Robbery

Date: November 17, 2016

On November 12, 2016, at approximately 7:00 pm an unknown person entered a local variety store in the 900 block of Wellington Street.

The suspect was brandishing a handgun of some sort. The suspect was wearing gloves, a facial covering, and sunglasses to conceal their identity. They are described as being tall and thin.

The suspect requested money from the till and then fled the scene in an unknown direction. No one was injured during the crime.

Unable to Get Away

On November 18, 2016, at approximately 7:30 pm, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit was on patrol in the area of Talfourd Street and Indian Road, in the City of Sarnia, when the officer observed an adult male riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. The officer activated the lights and sirens on the patrol car in attempt to stop the cyclist and speak to him about the by-law infraction he was committing by riding the bicycle on the sidewalk.

The male cyclist did not stop for the officer but rather sped up in an attempt to get away from the officer. At one point the officer was able to pull up beside the cyclist and verbally told him to stop but again the cyclist biked away attempting to evade the police. The officer was able to locate the male on foot in the area of Devine Street and Borden Street. As the male ran away from the police he dumped the backpack he was carrying.

The officer was able to catch up with the suspect attempting to hide in a town house complex in the area. The male suspect was subsequently arrested by the officer for failing to identify himself under the Highway Traffic Act. As the officer continued the investigation and retrieved the backpack, the suspect had dumped, the officer located break and enter tools along with a syringe hold a quantity of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Also found in within the backpack was a folding knife that opens with the simple use of centrifugal force (“flick knife”).

It was also later determined that the suspect was wanted on a warrant for breaches of his recognizance and probation.

Shawn Moyer, 33 years of age from Sarnia, now also faces the following charges:

5 counts of breach of probation

3 counts of breach of recognizance

1 count of possession of break and enter instruments

1 count of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition (the knife)

1 count of possession of a controlled substance

Moyer remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Investigation leads to Drug Trafficking Charges

Date: November 21, 2016

On November 8, 2016, at approximately 4:00 pm, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit located a suspect in the area of Victoria Street in the City of Sarnia, regarding property that had been stolen several days prior. While the officer was speaking to the suspect he observed that the suspect was being very nervous and acting odd. As the interaction continued the officer became concerned for his safety and conducted a pat down to check for weapons.

During the pat down the officer located a quantity of crystal methamphetamine in the suspects pocket along with some cash. The drugs were dispensed into individual baggies and believed to be meant to be sold on the street.

The accused, Nicholas Williams, 44 years of age, was arrested for:

1 count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

3 counts of breach of recognizance

3 counts of breach of probation

The quantity of drugs was believed to have a street value of approximately $1350.00.

The accused remains in custody pending his bail hearing.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Pedestrian

Date: November 22, 2016

Last evening, November 21, 2016, at approximately 7:00 pm, the Sarnia Police Service was dispatched to Lakeshore Road east of Lewis Lane to investigate a motor vehicle collision which involved a pedestrian.

The 22 year old pedestrian, that was struck by a motor vehicle, was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Currently members of the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit are investigating the collision and Lakeshore Road, between Lewis Lane and Brigden Road, will remain closed until approximately noon as the investigation continues.

Update: Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Pedestrian

Date: November 22, 2016

The Sarnia police Service would like to advise the public that Lakeshore road has reopened in the area of Mike Weir Park.

At approximately 6:00pm this evening, November 22, 2016, the same stretch of Lakeshore Road will be closed between Lewis Lane and Brigden Road until 8:00pm as members of the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit and Forensic Identification Branch re-enact the collision.

The investigation is still on going.

Driver Attempts to Flee From Police

Date: November 23, 2016

At approximately 1:00 am, on November 23, 2016, a member of the Sarnia Police Service General Patrol observed a vehicle travelling northbound on Russell Street with no tail lights on. As the officer began to follow the vehicle, the officer observed that it appeared that the driver was attempting to evade police by making quick and sudden turns.

At this point the officer activated his emergency lights and it was noted that the vehicle began to speed up. At one point the suspect vehicle made a sudden turn onto a property on Watson Street launching itself onto the lawn striking a tree and a lawn stone. Fortunately the officer was able to block the suspect vehicle in with his cruiser. At this point the driver stepped out and was placed under arrest without incident. It was determined that the 21 year old driver also had conditions not to operate a motor vehicle and not to be in the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle.

The 21 year old man from Sarnia remains in custody and awaits a bail hearing this morning and is facing charges for two counts of breach of recognizance and one count of flight while being pursed by peace officer.
