Broadcast time: 11:10 AM

Date: January 8, 2020

On January 7, 2021, an officer, from the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit, was travelling eastbound on Churchill Line, just east of Waterworks Road, and observed a vehicle travelling westbound at a very high rate of speed towards him. The officer activated the radar device in his cruiser and was able to lock in a speed of 159 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone.

The officer immediately activated his emergency cruiser lights and was able to turn around and follow the vehicle. The vehicle came to a safe stop.

The 34-year-old male driver was ultimately charged under the Highway Traffic Act (172(1) –Stunt Driving) due to his rate of speed being 50km/hr over the posted speed limit.

The driver’s motor vehicle was seized and impounded for seven days, his driver’s license was seized and suspended for 7 days, and a court date was set where he could potentially face a fine of over $10,000.

At these speeds the average vehicle will not likely be able to recover from any sort of emergency maneuver, let alone just simply braking in time. Collisions with high rates of speed are normally catastrophic with severe injuries and death being the end result.

We would like to remind everyone to please drive according to the speed limit and road conditions.
