The Sarnia Police Service will be welcoming La Grande Traversée to Sarnia and assisting the group as they make their way from Windsor to Sarnia on May 31, 2016 and then leave Sarnia for their next leg of their tour to London on June 1st.
This entire event takes place over thirty days, six provinces and involves more than 2000 km of cycling. La Grande Traversée is all that, but it is also a youth event to celebrate the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity to provide an example through actions rather than words. Born in 2013, LGT is a cycling relay that allows a few hundred teenagers from across Canada to achieve personal challenges, to develop their physical and mental perseverance, their leadership skills and to become great role models in their community. With the participation of high profile athletes and public figures, cyclists deliver their message by presenting the challenge to other students with unique school’s conferences.
On May 31, 2016 the group will be cycling into the city from St. Clair Parkway through the downtown core to the Bluewater Bridge and then to Michigan Avenue proceeding eastbound to the Rapids Parkway ending at Ecole Sec. Franco-Jeunesse. They will be entering our City at approximately 5:00 pm
On June 1, 2016 the group will be leaving the city via Lakeshore Road and then making their way to Old Lakeshore Road and heading eastbound from there. Departure should be around 9:00 am from the Rapids Parkway.
In both instances the Sarnia Police will be assisting with an escort of the cyclists for their safety. We are also asking drivers to be careful as these young athletes make their way through the city for a great cause.
