Broadcast time: 8:52 AM

Date: April 11, 2014

Sarnia Police Service is investigating a possible fraud involving an out of town paving business.

On Monday April 7, 2014 a woman in the eastern part of the city was approached at her residence by a man who said he was from a paving company. The man offered to pave her driveway that very day for $6,750.00. The man had a copy of a business license and completed an invoice for the work to be completed and payment made. The “company “then laid down loose gravel and left failing to complete the work agreed upon. Attempts made by the unhappy lady to contact the business met with negative results.

Sarnia Police are investigating and attempting to connect with the business.

With spring upon us homeowners are advised to be cautious with people offering great deals for home repairs and yard work. Check out the company first, get referrals from previous clients, ask friends, family or neighbours for names of companies they have used and are happy with and it is a good idea to get several estimates before getting work done.

Broadcast time: 11:10 AM

Date: April 15, 2014

Sarnia Police Service is beginning to utilize information obtained via the internet to assist in traffic enforcement.

Although this is not new technology it is relatively new to the Sarnia Police. Traffic Branch cars are fitted with BlackBerry Playbooks that allow officers access to the MTO Inquiry System. Officers can then use this information to assist in their investigations. One traffic officer using the system between the 4th of March and the 10th of April has laid 14 charges for No Insurance , 7 Driving While Suspended and 12 charges for other traffic violations. The No Insurance charge carries a fine of $5000 for the first offence and Driving While Suspended carries a fine of $1000 for the first offence.

This is proving to be a useful investigative tool for officers trying to ensure safety on our city streets.

Broadcast time: 9:41 AM

Date: April 28, 2014

Sarnia Police Service is participating in a province-wide public safety initiative to encourage Ontario residents to dispose of old and unused prescription medication in a secure and environmentally-friendly manner. Police in communities across Ontario recognize prescription drug abuse can lead to increases in a wide spectrum of violent acts, property crimes and accidental poisonings. We support this excellent initiative as another way to reduce this threat to public safety in a secure manner.

Sarnia Police Service will be hosting a collection site on Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day on Saturday, May 10, 2013 at 555 North Christina Street, which is Sarnia Police headquarters. The drop off time will be between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Citizens wishing to dispose of outdated, unused and unwanted prescription drugs may do so anonymously at Sarnia Police Headquarters without having to get out of their vehicles. The Sarnia Police command post will be on site in the front parking lot with uniformed officers present to collect the drugs.

Last year the service collected over 30 pounds of unwanted medication during the drop off day event.

Prescriptions Drug Drop-off Day is proudly supported by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP).
