RBC Thefts: Male Identified

The male depicted in a video, and a photo, released by the Sarnia Police Service has been identified and is currently in custody. Investigators are confident the male in custody is the person in the video and photo.

The Sarnia Police Service would like to thank the public for their overwhelming number of tips in assisting to identify this male.

Sarnia Police will release more details as the investigation continues.

Officer Assaulted

Date: February 26, 2014

A Sarnia Police Service COPPS officer was assaulted yesterday while arresting a male party wanted for Failing to Comply with Probation. Just before 4:00PM, February 25, 2014, the officer was on patrol in the 200 block of Queen Street when he observed a man known to him and to be wanted. The man was on a bicycle and when approached by the officer he tried to ride away and the officer followed. The man got off the bicycle and tried to run into an apartment but tripped and the officer took hold of him. While on the ground the man repeatedly kicked the officer and was able to stand up and began punching the officer to the head. He was taken to the ground again and was warned he would be sprayed with pepper spray if he continued to resist. The man continued to kick and resist and was sprayed. Even after being sprayed the man continued to resist and the officer held onto him until officers arrived to help. The officer was able to remain on duty after the incident.

 

Shaun DUCHAINE, 51 years old, of Sarnia now faces one count of Resist a Peace Officer, One count Assault Peace Officer and an additional charge of Fail to Comply with Probation. He will attend a Bail Hearing today.

2014 OACP Crime Prevention Campaign

The Sarnia Police Service is joining police services across the Province in supporting the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s (OACP) 2014 Crime Prevention Campaign, which focuses on promoting citizens’ role in preventing crime and building safe and healthy communities.

 

“We believe that strong, safe, and healthy communities are built when citizens partner with their police service in preventing criminal acts before they happen,” said Constable Les Jones. “Our goal is to raise public awareness and empower people throughout our communities to become involved in their personal safety and that of their neighbours, friends, and co-workers.”

 

The campaign features an informational crime prevention booklet that will be used by police services to promote local crime prevention initiatives. Topics covered in the “Your Community. Your Safety. Get involved” booklet, include getting involved in local crime prevention initiatives and programs, when to call 9-1-1, securing your home or business from break-ins and other property crimes, vigilance against on-line fraud, identification theft, and other cybercrimes, and guarding against vehicle theft. Police Asking For Assistance

Sarnia Police Service is asking for assistance to identify a male and female suspect captured on surveillance video.

On January 8, 2014 shortly before midnight someone entered an unused dressing room at the RBC Centre on London Rd while a pick-up hockey game was taking place. The suspect was then able to break into the adjoining locked dressing room. Once in the locker room the suspect took a wallet, cash and iPhones.

On the January 18, 2014 a male described as white, 6 feet tall, aged 30-35 years with light brown hair, attempted to set up a credit account at a Sarnia furniture store using stolen identification taken from the RBC Cemtre. He was denied. It was also discovered that this suspect had attended a Sarnia electronics store and purchased a cell phone using identification taken at the RBC Centre. The suspect also received a $100.00 gift card for purchasing the new phone.

The female depicted, tried to use the stolen gift card at the same electronics store, but an employee realized the gift card had been reported as stolen and the transaction was denied.

The same male can be seen in the arena theft as well as in the electronic store incident.

COPPS Busy

The Sarnia Police Service C.O.P.P.S Unit was active over night with two separate arrests. At about 9:00 PM Thursday February 27, 2014 a COPPS officer observed what he believed to be a drug transaction taking place between two people in the London and Murphy Road area of the city. The persons involved left in two separate vehicles and the officer was able to stop one of the vehicles. There were three males in the vehicle and the officer recognized a 40 year old passenger to be wanted on outstanding Breach of Probation and Drug warrants from Lambton O.P.P. The male was arrested and will be held for a Bail Hearing. A 22 year old male passenger was found to have a prohibited knife on his possession and was cautioned and the knife seized.

Later during the officer’s shift, around 1:00AM, the officer observed two females leave from a residence in the 500 block of London Road in a taxi cab. The officer believed one of the girls to be on conditions from a previous conviction. The 18 year old Sarnia female initially identified herself by a different name. She was arrested for Public Mischief and a search revealed she had drug paraphernalia on her possession. The young lady was on a bail condition to observe a curfew and on two separate Probation Orders one of which states not to possess drug paraphernalia.

She was held for a Bail Hearing and will face charges of Public Mischief, Fail to Comply with Bail Conditions and three counts of Fail to Comply with Probation Order.

Hit and Run

Sarnia Police Service is looking for a pickup truck involved in a hit and run collision.

On Thursday 27 February 2014 at about 2:30pm, the pickup truck struck a parked car in the 200 block of Maxwell Street. Police are looking for a pickup truck described as possibly a 2005 GMC or Chevy 4 door king cab, two tone green with silver or grey along the bottom. The truck has a full sized green topper on the back.

Damage to the suspect truck will be to the right rear side.

Robbery Suspect Arrested Again

Sarnia Police Service arrested a 44 year old male who was out on Bail for alleged involvement in the September 26, 2013 robbery on Queen Street.

The male had been arrested on February 10, 2014 and charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Assault, Robbery with a Weapon and two counts of Breach of Probation in relation to the September robbery. The man was released on Bail with a condition to maintain a curfew. On March 5, 2014 shortly after 8:00PM the male was arrested for not abiding by his curfew and taken to Sarnia Police Headquarters. During the booking in process officers noticed the man was wearing new jeans and in fact the pants still had a security tag attached.

The man will be held for a Bail Hearing and faces one count of Fail to Comply with Bail Conditions, one count of Fail to Comply with Probation and of course Possession of Stolen Property.

Sarnia Police seek public assistance in solving Hit and Run Collision

On March 10, 2014, at approximately 0926 hours a 2005 Hyundai was proceeding southbound in the centre lane of Indian Road near London Road in the City of Sarnia. The Hyundai was being followed by a dark red car – possibly a Mazda product – that attempted to pass in the curb lane. While passing the Hyundai, the red sports car sideswiped the Hyundai and then returned back to the centre lane. The red sports car failed to stop after striking the Hyundai and continued southbound on Indian Road. The driver of the Hyundai attempted to follow the red sports car, but lost sight of the car in the area of Russell and Cromwell Streets. The red sports car will have noticeable damage to the driver’s door area and may have silver paint transfer from the Hyundai.

The Sarnia Police are asking any witnesses to the collision or anyone with information relating to the suspect vehicle or driver to contact the investigating officer, Constable Lindsay Johnston, at 519 344-8861 ext. 6164 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

London Road closed at Airport Road – Sarnia Police ask Sarnia residents to stay off roads

Due to poor road and weather conditions and until further notice, London Road is closed to traffic in both directions at Airport Road in the City of Sarnia.

Environment Canada his issued a Blowing Snow Warning for the Sarnia Area. Visibility and drifting due to blowing snow is making road clearing difficult for Sarnia City Works employees. Sarnia Police are asking residents are asked to stay off the roads this evening.

Missing Sarnia man found

Sarnia Police charge two males in relation to Home Invasion

During the early morning hours of March 13, 2014, two males forced their way into a residence in the south end of Sarnia. At the time a lone male occupant was sleeping in the residence.

Once inside the residence, one of the males threatened and then assaulted the homeowner with two different weapons causing serious injuries to the victim. After the assault, the suspects left the residence, but stated they would return. The victim escaped the residence by a window and contacted police. Sarnia Police Service uniformed officers responded to the scene and initiated an investigation along with members of the Sarnia Police Forensic Identification Branch and the Criminal Investigations Branch.

At approximately 5:30am, two suspects were arrested by Sarnia Police near the scene. At the time of arrest one of the suspects was found to be in possession of weapons believed to have been used in the assault.

The victim was transported to Bluewater Health in Sarnia where he was treated for injuries to his head and arm and then released.

Karen Caughlin: OPP Chronology Video

The Ontario Provincial Police has made a public appeal and unveiled a case chronology video in the hope of reinvigorating the investigation into the death of Karen Caughlin.

The 14 year old Sarnia resident was found on the morning of Saturday March 16th, 1974, near the side of the then 6th Side Road of Freer Rd, now known as Plowing Match Road, between Churchill Line and Lasalle Line in Lambton County.

At a news conference, members of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch pointed out they are specifically looking at a 9 hour gap in the time when Karen was last seen – in the early morning (approx. 12:50am) of Saturday March 16th 1974 in Sarnia – and when her body was discovered at around 9:50am 22 kilometers away.

Police also want to speak to or hear about anyone who may have seen or been with Caughlin on Friday March 15th at locations in her community or at Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School (SCITS).

Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Collision

Date: March 17, 2014

 

Police are looking for the public’s assistance to identify a motor vehicle involved in a motor vehicle collision which occurred at approximately 3:20 pm on Monday March 17, 2014 in front of Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School on Michigan Avenue.

The suspect motor vehicle involved is described as a Green Van which was driving eastbound. The van would have sustained damage to the front end and possibly to the front passenger wheel well area. The only description of the driver is a female with blonde hair.

The other motor vehicle involved was a silver volkswagon cabrio, which remained at the scene.
