Broadcast time: 2:00 PM

Date: December 2, 2013

With the shopping season in full swing, Sarnia Police would like to remind the community of these extra safety tips that can be beneficial to a happy holiday season.

If you are shopping at night, be sure to park in well-lit areas. Lock your vehicle at all times and keep parcels out of view. If you are making several trips to your car with gifts, change your parking spot. Do not leave your car running while you make a “quick stop”. Have your keys ready and in your hand before you leave the store. Keep your purse with you a secure under your arm. Never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart.

Use ATM machines in public areas. Protect your PIN and keep all ATM receipts. Be aware of your surroundings. Charity scams increase at this time of year. Only donate to known organizations. Monitor all your credit card transactions.

In regards to your home, do not broadcast on social media sites that you are away or will be going away over the holidays. If you are away, make arrangements for mail pick-up and snow removal. Leave a timer on for lights inside. Do not recycle gift packaging all at once. Cut up boxes and turn them inside out. Make sure the gifts inside your home and under your tree are not clearly visible from the outside. Take extra time to check all your doors and windows to make sure they are locked and secure.
