Sarnia Police have received a report of a potential fraud that appears to have been attempted in the morning hours of February 25, 2015.
A lady received a phone call from a male party who advised he was with a heating company and offered the services of a furnace inspection. An appointment was set up, and a male posing as a furnace service technician promptly attended the residence which is in central Sarnia.
After looking at the furnace, he removed the filter. He told the lady her filter needed to be replaced, and this would cost her $500.00. She advised she thought this was too expensive, and the male then lowered his price to $300.00. The lady became suspicious, and declined this offer. The male became angry, but soon left.
Police urge all homeowners to be wary of any unsolicited offers such as this one. This was a highly inflated price. Changing a furnace filter can be easily done in most cases by the home owner. (However, if you are unsure about doing anything with your furnace, it is advisable to seek out professional assistance for safety reasons.) Furnace filters can be as inexpensive as $15.00.
