Broadcast time: 8:17AM

Date: September 15, 2014

On Sunday September 14, 2014 at about 1:00 PM Sarnia Police responded to the area of the Howard Watson Nature Trail and the highway 402 after receiving reports of a suspicious male in the area armed with a handgun and wearing camouflage gear.

To ensure public safety police stopped east and west bound traffic on Highway 402 with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police. Sarnia Police also set up a perimeter around the area stopping all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Some businesses were also locked down in the area. The Sarnia Police Emergency Response Team was notified; however the 23 year old Sarnia man was arrested prior to their arrival.

Once arrested it was discovered the handgun was in fact a BB gun. The Criminal investigation Branch executed a Public Safety Warrant around 6:30PM at the man’s residence later that day. Detectives seized a 9mm pistol, three shotguns and a rifle belonging to the man.

The man was charged with Weapons Dangerous and Causing a Disturbance and later released.

Police remind the public to think before transporting BB guns, Pellet Guns or Airsoft guns. Many of these guns mimic the real thing and law enforcement must treat them as real when they respond.
