On Monday July 7, 2014 just after 11:30 PM a uniform patrol officer stopped a car for a traffic check on Wellington Street. In the car were four young persons all aged 17 or 18 years. The officer asked for the ownership and insurance for the car and as the driver reached for the documents the officer noticed the butt of a handgun hanging out of the driver’s pocket. The officer could see the words Colt Defender on the butt of the handgun. Additional officers were asked to attend and everyone removed from the car. The handgun was found to be a pellet gun. The pellet gun looked and felt like a real handgun. The people in the car were cautioned and released.
This is not the first time officers have encountered a pellet gun that resembled the real thing. People who own these guns are reminded to use caution when transporting them or using them. Officers who encounter them or respond to calls related to these “look a likes” will treat them as the real thing until they can safely determine if they are real or not.
