9-1-1 Hang Up Leads to Arrest

Yesterday, around 11:40 AM, Sarnia Police were sent to a 9-1-1 hang up call.  In the background, the communication operator could hear a woman screaming.  Officers attended and approached the residence in the 300 block of Campbell Street.  They were met at the door by a crying female.  She immediately informed officers that a man had left on a bike.

An officer went inside to check the welfare of all the occupants.  He noticed a large amount of broken glass on the floor.  The woman stated a verbal altercation had happened before police arrived and that her ex-boyfriend left just prior.  Another woman on the couch confirmed the story.

Other officers checked the area and found the ex-boyfriend in the area of Sutton and Confederation Streets.  Further investigation revealed the man was on a Recognizance of Bail with conditions not to associate or communicate with the woman or to be within 25 meters of her.  He was promptly arrested and held for bail.  He faces two charges of Breach of Recognizance.

All 9-1-1 calls to police are responded to.  Two officers are sent, regardless of the information received at the time of the call.  At times, these calls are found to be someone who has “miss dialed” or children playing with the phone.  This is an example of a 9-1-1 call that was not false and a reason why two officers are always sent.
