As part of an investigation regarding the trafficking of illegal drugs members of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit conducted a traffic stop in the area of Wellington Street and Front Street. Once the officers approached the vehicle an eight-inch butcher’s knife was observed on the ground within easy access.
At this point the occupants of the vehicle were asked to step out, to ensure everyone’s safety, and were to be placed under arrest for possession of weapons dangerous until officers could investigate the matter further. The driver remained cooperative and was handcuffed without any issue. The passenger began to struggle with the other officer as attempts were made to handcuff him. As the struggle ensued and the suspect continued to struggle and to avoid further escalation the suspect was tasered. This with effective and allowed the officers to hand cuff the suspect.
During the struggle officers noted that the suspect kept reaching for his waist band which initially raised concerns of possible weapon. A search of the suspect, in the area of his waist band, located 4.5 grams of suspected fentanyl with an approximate street value of $2,250. Also located was a digital scale and $2,265 in Canadian currency.
The passenger attempted to give a false name but ultimately officers were able to identify who the individual was.
The accused (passenger), was identified as Frank Honbong Lee, 51 years of age, of Quebec. Lee faces the following charges:
1) Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking
2) Resist peace officer
3) Public Mischief
Lee has been held for a bail hearing for some time later today.
