On June 15, 2021, at approximately 1:15 PM, the Sarnia Police Service receive a complaint regarding a vehicle travelling westbound on London Road, from East Street, that had crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic multiple times.
A short time later the vehicle was located at the intersection of London Road and Christina Street by officers and a traffic stop was attempted with the use of the cruiser’s emergency lights. The vehicle in question did not stop immediately but rather continued driving at a very low rate of speed.
Once the vehicle finally came to a stop the officer interacted with the driver. As the officer continued the investigation it was determined that his driver’s licence had been suspended and that he was breaching his conditions of release by being out of his residence. The accused was thus arrested.
The officer also formed grounds to arrest the individual for impaired operation of a conveyance while impaired, which would relate to the initial reason for the officer’s involvement. Secondary to a search of the vehicle the officer located drugs, including a quantity of suspected purple liquid fentanyl along with approximately 1.2 grams of purple fentanyl in its solid state.
The accused was transported back to the station where he submitted to testing with a Drug Recognition Expert.
The accused, Joseph Robert Bonneau, 35 years of age, of Tilbury, faces the following charges:
1) Operation while impaired by drugs
2) Failing to comply with release order
3) Possession of a Schedule I Substance (opioid)
Bonneau was held for a bail hearing.
