On June 9, 2021, at approximately 12:05 AM, a female was present in front of the emergency doors of the hospital, located on Norman Street, waiting for an individual she had brought in. While there a male, who was also present, drew what was believed to be a firearm, according to witnesses, pointed the firearm at the female, and discharged it several times. Fortunately, nothing ever struck the female who was able to run back inside through the emergency department doors while the suspect fled the scene on his bicycle. The accused and the victim in this matter were unknown to each other.
At approximately 12:40 AM, officers were able to locate the suspect due to the description given. He was located in the area of London Road and Russell Street. The accused was also wanted on an outstanding warrant. When officers attempted to arrest the accused he pulled away from officers and fled on his bicycle. Police were able to catch up to the male and apprehend him but before doing so the accused attempted to strike an officer in the face resulting in a brief struggle that was short lived.
The accused in this matter, Corey Michael Popp, 34 years of age, faces the following charges:
1) Assault with a weapon
2) Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
3) Resist a Peace Officer
4) Assault a Peace Officer
Popp remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
Officers were unable to locate the weapon described by witnesses. If anyone does come across a firearm in the area of Norman Street, Russell Street, London Road, or in the surrounding area are asked not to the touch the weapon but rather contact the Sarnia Police at 519-344-8861, extension 0.
