On Saturday, May 22, 2021, at approximately 7:05 PM, a vehicle travelling eastbound on Campbell Street, in the area of Shepherd Street, came face to face with another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. This forced the eastbound vehicle to veer off the road to avoid a collision while the other vehicle also continued to leave the road and continued onto the boulevard where it struck a hydro pole causing the pole to snap and fall over at a 45-degree angle (the road remained closed for several hours while hydro crews repaired the damage).
The vehicle that struck the pole fled the area while driving on a flat tire and with significant damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver of the other vehicle followed the suspect to the area of Wellington Street and Brock Street where officers from the Sarnia Police Service located the suspect driver.
The investigating officer formed grounds to arrest the driver for impaired operation by drugs. The suspect was transported to the Sarnia Police Service Headquarters where the individual was tested by a qualified drug recognition expert.
The accused in this matter, Chad Richard Stewart, 37 years of age, of Sarnia, was charged with impaired operation by drugs and failing to report an accident under the Highway Traffic Act.
