The first incident occurred on June 4, 2020, at 5:25 PM, when a vehicle was observed driving all over River Road (St. Clair Parkway) as it proceeded northbound into Sarnia. The vehicle kept veering into oncoming traffic nearly striking a number of vehicles. The suspect vehicle then rear-ended a vehicle and left the scene.
The suspect vehicle continued to be driven erratically along Vidal Street. When it approached St. Andrew’s Street the suspect vehicle is alleged to have run a red light striking another vehicle.
The suspect again left the scene and headed to its home address. Police were then dispatched to the residence and were able to locate the vehicle and the alleged driver.
The accused in this matter is a Ryan James Haggan, 23 years of age, of Sarnia, and he has been charged with the following:
- Two counts of careless driving
- Two counts of failing to remain
- Two counts failing to remain at the scene of an accident
- One count of a novice driver with a breath alcohol concentration being greater than zero.
The second incident occurred on June 8, 2020. Officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the northwest corner of Exmouth Street and Capel Street. A 63-year-old female was transported to hospital and later passed away due to the injuries she sustained.
Due to all the witnesses and information processed in this investigation it has been determined that the accused in this matter, Michael VanDevenne, 41 years of age, of Sarnia, has been charged with careless driving causing death.
