On August 25, 2020, the Sarnia Police Service received a complaint regarding the theft of a motor vehicle from the 1200 block of London Road at approximately 8:10 PM. At approximately 8:40 PM officers on the road received a description of the stolen vehicle via dispatch.
As the information was being broadcasted, an officer spotted the vehicle travelling northbound on Mitton Street from Wellington Street and attempted to stop the stolen vehicle with the cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens. The stolen vehicle did not stop immediately but continued on attempting to evade the police and failing to stop for various stop signs. The vehicle finally came to a stop in the area of Mitton Street and Cromwell Street.
The driver was taken into custody without incident. A search of the suspect and his property located property belonging to several other individuals along with a laptop and other devices. Also located was a folding knife that opened with centrifugal force (a “flick knife”)
The accused in this matter, Robert James Maness, 24 years of age, of Sarnia, is facing the following charges:
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Flight from a peace officer
- Unauthorized possession of a weapon
- Three counts of property obtained by crime under $5000
