Impaired Driver Collides with Five Vehicles

A 28 year old Brampton man was charged with impaired driving, operate a motor vehicle with more than 80mg of alcohol, dangerous driving and fail to remain at the scene of a collision after five vehicles were struck in the Michigan, Newell, and Flamingo Street areas. The incident took place on August 12, 2013, between 8:50 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

Initially, the Brampton man was operating his vehicle, which was towing a utility trailer, east on Michigan Avenue when he veered into the westbound lane. A westbound vehicle on Michigan Avenue tried unsuccessfully to avoid a collision the east bound vehicle. The westbound vehicle was side swiped and sustained damage to a side mirror. The Eastbound vehicle swerved again and struck another westbound vehicle on Michigan Avenue.

The suspect vehicle attempted to flee the area by turning north onto Newell Street where two parked vehicles were struck. The suspect continued to Hollywood Place where he continued westbound at a high rate of speed swerving all over the road. In the meantime, the trailer he was towing lost a tire. The vehicle continued to Christina Street then on to Flamingo where yet another parked vehicle was side swiped. The suspect vehicle then came to a stop on the cul-de-sac on Flamingo Drive.

The driver was arrested on Flamingo Drive for impaired driving. A later breath reading revealed his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

After further investigation of the incident, the driver was charged with “over 80mg”, fail to remain and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The accused was held in custody until sober at which time he was released on bail with a court date of September 24, 2013.

Paramedics attended the scene of one of the collisions to deal with minor injuries resulting from the deployment of an airbag. The patient was not transported to hospital. There were no other known injuries. The extent of damage to the vehicles involved is not known.
