On September 11, 2019, just before midnight, the Sarnia Police Service received an alarm call from the Progressive Auto Sales Arena regarding a possible break and enter to the building. Officers arrived to find unsecured doors and upon searching the building noted that someone had attempted to break into an ATM located in the building. The thief was unable to gain entry to the ATM.
At this time a search of the building was conducted and no one was located inside the building. The building was again secured by a key holder and officers cleared from the scene.
Shortly before 2 am, on September 12, 2019, another alarm call was made to the Sarnia Police Service, again from the Progressive Auto Sales Arena. Officers were able to arrive on scene in short order and observed a suspect attempting to flee from the building on foot. Officers gave chase on foot and were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.
The suspect refused to identify himself to police at the time and was found to be in possession of break and enter tools along with a small quantity of cocaine.
The Police were able to identify the suspect as Frederick Michael Burwell, 41 years of age, of no fixed address. Burwell has been charged with:
- Two counts of break and enter
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of break in instruments
Burwell was held for a bail hearing later this morning.
