The Sarnia Police Service has been made aware of another scam that has popped up in the city and happens all over.
The scammer advises that he or she has a house or apartment to rent and offers a very attractive rent. The victim is asked to drive by the residence to take a look if they wish to. Also, the fraudster presents a very appealing story to why it is being rented out in this fashion and what a great opportunity it is.
The criminal will correspond with you via internet but never actually shows you the residence. First and last months’ rent is expected to be deposited into a bank account at which point the fraudster will allegedly forward you the keys to the residence. Unfortunately no keys will ever show up.
There have been no victims to this scam that the Sarnia Police Service is aware of locally but we would like to advise the public of its existence.
Always do your research when renting a place or any sort of transaction of this nature. Obviously take the time to see the residence and meet with the individual renting the residence out.
Remember if it seems too good to be true more than likely it is!
