On March 13, 2019, at approximately 2:30 pm, the Sarnia Fire Department and the Sarnia Police Service responded to a residential fire in the 200 block of Maxwell Street in the City of Sarnia.
At the time the fire started several people were within the residence. It is alleged that at some point prior to the fire the accused was upset about something with another resident. The incident escalated to the point where a third person attempted to intervene and his sweater was set on fire by some sort of incendiary device.
Fortunately that person was able to remove the sweater in time before being burnt. The fire then rapidly spread throughout the upper level of the house causing extensive damage to the home. All occupants were able to escape without injury.
As the investigation continued officers were able to arrest the accused who currently remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
James Lawrence Kelly, 23 years of age, of Sarnia, has been charged with assault with a weapon, arson with disregard for human life, and arson causing damage to property.
Damage to the home is believed to be approximately $50 000.
