On August 22, 2018, at approximately 11:40 am, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit was on patrol in the London Line corridor in the City of Sarnia. At this time the officer observed a vehicle being driven by an individual who is a prohibited driver, Canada-wide.
The officer conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and arrested the driver for disqualified driving while a passenger located in the front seat stepped out of the car and stood by. The passenger requested that the officer retrieve a black bag in the rear of the vehicle that belonged to him. As the officer retrieved the bag, that was already partially opened, he observed various forms of drug paraphernalia along with a clear plastic baggy containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
At this point the passenger was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Once the passenger was arrested a search of his person was conducted and further drugs were located.
Within the vehicle the officer located a taser like weapon under the seat.
Both suspects were transported to the station to be processed and searched further.
The driver of the vehicle Curtis Edward McBean, 29 years of age, from Lambton County, was charged with possession of an unauthorized weapon, driving while disqualified, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), and breach of probation.
The passenger of the vehicle, Richard Hanson-Smith, 32 years of age, of Sarnia, faces charges for possession of an unauthorized weapon, two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (heroin and methamphetamine), two counts of possession of a controlled substance, breach of recognizance, and breach of probation.
The total street value of drugs seized was approximately $2400.00
Both parties were held for a bail hearing. McBean has since been released from court while Hanson Smith remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
