Over the last several months industries on Plank Road that recycle metal have fallen victim to break and enters where various types of metals have been stolen. As part of their target directed policing, members of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit conducted extra patrols in this area in an attempt to locate any possible suspects.
On January 25, 2018, at 11:15 pm, an officer, from the COPPS Unit, observed a vehicle suspiciously parked at a business on Plank Road. The officer waited for the vehicle to leave the area an hour later and from there conducted a traffic stop. It was observed by the officer that the vehicle was heavily weighted down and that there were two male occupants in the vehicle. The officer formed the grounds to arrest the two suspects for break and enter and theft.
A search of the vehicle located several hundred pounds of stolen metals such as catalytic converters, copper radiators, copper pipe, copper wire and stainless steel. Also located during a search of the vehicle were various tools used to break into the businesses and cut the metals. It was also noted that a hole was cut into the compound fence where the vehicle was parked when originally seen by the officer.
Currently the two accused men remain in custody and are awaiting a bail hearing.
A 46 year old man from Sarnia has been charged with breach of probation, two counts of break and enter, and one count of possession of break and enter instruments.
The second man, who is 28 years old, and also from Sarnia, has been charged with two counts of breach of probation, 2 counts of break and enter, and one count of possession of break and enter instruments.
