Date: February 14, 2017

On February 2, 2017, a 45 year old man from Sarnia entered a local bank in an attempt to convert a sum of American cash into Canadian dollars. The suspect presented with denominations of $20’s, $50’s, and $100 bills.

The teller was immediately suspicious of the money and contacted senior staff in the bank who also confirmed the teller’s suspicion that the currency was counterfeit. The bank immediately contacted the Sarnia Police Service who in turn investigated the matter.

The 45 year old man was charged with one count of possession of counterfeit money and one count for attempt to utter forged documents. The accused was released on a Promise to Appear.

The Sarnia Police Service would like to advise the public to inspect American dollar bills that they may receive and take the time to ensure that they are authentic. Various internet websites will give you suggestions of what to look for such as raised print, texture of the paper and print errors.
