Broadcast time: 11:10 am

Date: December 8, 2016

On December 5, 2016, at approximately 2:30am, a 16 year old male stole his parents’ 2016 Dodge Challenger from the family home in the north end of the city of Sarnia. When the parents heard the vehicle leave the driveway and realized that it was their son who had taken the car, they contacted the police. As the information was being forwarded to the road officers a constable that was on patrol in the immediate area of where the vehicle had left observed it and attempted to stop the vehicle with the cruiser’s emergency lights.

Due to the roads being slippery and wet, along with the high rate of speed and dangerous manner the vehicle was being driven in, the officer ended his attempt to try and stop the vehicle out of a concern for safety for the young driver, the officer and the public.

A number of minutes later another vehicle travelling northbound on Modeland Road witnessed the Dodge Challenger eastbound on Cathcart Boulevard and then watched it proceed across Modeland Road without stopping while travelling at a high rate of speed. The stolen vehicle was driven across the front yard of a residence and through a brick wall and then through the residence ending up on the back patio.

Fortunately, no one was at home at the time of the crash. The 16 year old male driver was the only occupant of the motor vehicle and did not sustain any serious injuries but was taken to hospital for observation.

At approximately 11:45 am, on December 7, 2016, the 16 year old suspect attended the Sarnia Police Station where he was arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and flight while pursued by a peace officer.

The young offender was released on a promise to appear to his parents and will be attending court for his first appearance in January of 2017.
