As part of their mandate of assisting the Community with specific concerns, the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit, amongst their other duties, has been working with local businesses to help them deal with shoplifters.

On January 27, 2016, in the 1300 block of London Road, a store surveillance video captured a female placing on a pair of running shoes and walking out of the store without paying after discarding the shoes that she was wearing in the store.

Secondary to further information received from another merchant at the same address, the same female was observed on February 1, 2016, by store security select a number of clothing articles and place them in her purse and a shopping bag and then left the store without paying.

The total value of the articles taken was over $500. Due to the fact that officer does have regular contact with the merchants at the shopping center and the sharing of information, they were able to determine who the suspect was quickly and effectively.

On February 2, 2016, the female suspect, Jessica Hayward, 21 years of age, was arrested at 2:50 pm for Theft Under $5000 x2, Breach of Recognizance x2 and Breach of Probation x2 . Hayward was held for a bail hearing.
