Due to ongoing concerns regarding trespassing to the abandoned Bluewater Health Hospital site located at George Street and Mitton Street in the City of Sarnia, the Sarnia Police Service has made extra efforts to increase Patrols in the area. On January 20, 2016, at approximately 4:05 pm, two members of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit were patrolling the area when they observed two males known to them pulling a cart with two large hockey bags full of some sort of large item leaving from the old emergency door ramp area. It was observed that the two males had left the building with the cart in tow.
Upon the suspects noticing the police officers they immediately dropped the cart they were pulling and began walking away from the area. The officers were able to arrest one of the male suspects at the time while the other one fled from the area. Eric Collins, 31 years old, from Sarnia was arrested for Break and Enter and Theft. It was determined that the bags contained over a 140 pounds of copper tubing that had been removed from the building. Also located on the person were tools such as a pipe wrench, a hacksaw, etc.
The second suspect was arrested on January 25, 2016 and was identified as Eugene Sterner, 41 years of age, from Sarnia.
Collins was charged with Break and Enter, Theft under $5000 and Possession of Break and Enter Tools while Sterner was charged with Break and Enter and Theft under $5000. Both will be attending court at later dates for their first appearance.
