Broadcast time: 2:25 pm

Date: May 30th, 2017

A 29 year old male from Kettle Point was arrested and charged with weapons and drug related offences by the Sarnia Police Service.

On May 27, 2017, at approximately 1:50 am, officers from the COPPS Unit were on routine patrol in the area of Wellington Street and Walnut Ave in the City of Sarnia. At this time, they observed a male party cycling eastbound on the sidewalk with no headlight which led to the officers conducting a traffic stop.

The male was wearing dark clothing including a hoodie pulled over a low-brimmed ball cap and a dark bandana covering his face from the nose down. The male was also clutching a leather strapped bag at his mid-section attempting to conceal it from the officers. When he was finally stopped, he falsely identified himself to police providing a fictitious name. As the traffic stop continued, the officers began to recognize his true identity once he pulled down his bandana. During this time, the officers also noted that he appeared agitated and uncomfortable with police.

The officers were also aware that there was an outstanding warrant for this male. While dealing with him and confirming the warrant, they noted that there was a handle sticking out from the bag that he was clutching close to his chest. The handle appeared to be that of a machete resting in a cross-draw position. Officers quickly removed him from his bicycle and took physical control of his arms for safety concerns. At this time he was placed under arrest on the strength of the outstanding warrant.

The leather bag was removed and searched revealing a large machete with a black handle, which was easily accessible and concealed within sight of officers. During the search, officers also located a black laptop case containing a large amount of drug-related paraphernalia, including several new and used syringes, tin spoons, sterile water, and alcohol swabs.

Officers searched the male and located 0.21 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine and 0.56 grams of suspected cannabis marihuana on the accused.

Jacob Lee Kaczanowski has been charged with Public Mischief, Possession of Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace, Possession of a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Schedule I Substance, Possession of a Schedule II Substance, and three counts of Breach of Probation. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Below is a picture of the machete seized by police.

Officers Will Be Dedicated to Enforcing the Offence of Distracted Driving

Broadcast time: 9:25 am

Date: June 5, 2017

On Tuesday June 6 and Wednesday, June 7, 2017, members of the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit, COPPS Unit, and Community Services will be dedicated to looking out for and enforcing the law against those that decide to use a hand held wireless communication device (cell phone) in their hand while driving. The fine, including victim surcharge, is $490.00 and is also worth three demerit points.

There will be a zero tolerance policy for this offence. Unfortunately distracted driving continues to be an ongoing concern on our roadways. Education is very important but it does not seem to bring the message home to all drivers.

Remember, if you are holding any cell phone or other electronic device in your hand while driving, even if you are stopped at a stop light, it is an offence. If you are required to take a call or make a call remember to pull over to the side of the road where it is safe to do so or into a parking lot and make the call or use a Bluetooth Tooth device to speak. If not, be prepared to be ticketed.

Broadcast time: 11:45 am

Date: June 5, 2017

In 2005, in an effort to reduce the chances of citizens becoming victims of identity theft, Constable Ken McLachlin started the annual event called “Shred Event.”

The 12th Annual Shred Event will be held on Saturday June 24th, 2017 in the Walmart parking lot on Quinn drive.

This annual event assists in reducing fraud and identity theft crimes in our community. The Sarnia Police Service and the Sarnia Police Association will be sponsoring this year’s event and would also like to thank our community partners; the Shred It Company and Walmart who help make this event possible.

This event is meant for private home owners and not for businesses.  Please bring any sensitive documents that may divulge private information that could be used by criminals to commit frauds.  Please do not bring newspapers and magazines as they can be recycled.

This event will be collecting donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.  All money goes to our athletes as they pursue their dreams of making the Special Olympics and winning a medal.

Update – 2017 Distracted Driving Blitz

Broadcast time: 11:45am

Date: June 8, 2017

Forty drivers in total were ticketed in Sarnia for distracted driving offences during a two day community safety initiative that was made public knowledge prior to commencement.

On June 6th & 7th, 2017, officers from the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit, Community Services Division and COPPS Unit conducted a two day distracted driving blitz focusing on drivers using hand-held communication or entertainment devices. Of the 40 drivers, 23 were female and 17 were male. The youngest driver was 18 and the oldest was 69. Roughly half the drivers stopped were aware of the two day blitz. Ten other tickets were handed out for various offences under The Highway Traffic Act.

In addition, most drivers who received fines for distracted driving while checking their cell phones at a red light were unaware that this action constituted an offence. The Sarnia Police Service would once again like to remind drivers that “hands free driving” means hands on the steering wheel – not on your phone. This includes being stopped at a red light, stop sign, traffic jam, etc. If you need to use your cell phone, please pull off the road or use a device that allows your phone to operate “hands free”.

The offence of driving with a hand-held communication device or hand-held entertainment device is $490.00 and a gain of three demerit points.

Wanted Man Attempted to Flee From Police

Broadcast time: 11:25 am

Date: June 12, 2017

On June 12, 2017, at approximately 9:00 am, officers from the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit attended an address on Grove Avenue in the City of Sarnia regarding a male party wanted on outstanding warrants from the Chatham-Kent area.

At this time officers observed a vehicle pull into the address on Grove Avenue and the wanted male exit the vehicle. As the suspect walked to the house officers called out to him to stop. The suspect then began to run from the officers and dashed into the residence and then out of the home, over fences and through yards as officers continued to follow.

Officers were able to corner the suspect who had now picked up a tree limb that was three feet long and several inches in diameter. The suspect squared off with the officers with the tree limb and was then tasered. During this event the accused dropped the tree limb but was able to flee from police when the taser lost its effect.

Another short pursuit began but the suspect was again stopped, while on foot, and as officers attempted to gain control of him a struggle ensued. He was finally brought under control and arrested. The suspect was placed in the back seat of a police cruiser where he continued to act aggressively by yelling and screaming and spitting all over the back of the cruiser.

Kyle Wright-Morgan, 26 years of age, remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing due to his new charges in Sarnia, which are:

  1. Three counts of resist a peace officer
  2. Mischief over $5000.00
  3. Assault with a weapon

Once this matter has been dealt with in Sarnia, Kyle Wright-Morgan will also have to face the charges from Chatham-Kent.
