Careless Driving in Canatara

A Sarnia Police Service Uniform Patrol officer acting on complaints of poor driving in Canatara Park charged one person last night. A Sarnia man in his early twenties was observed by the officer in the beach parking lots driving at a high rate of speed and squealing the tires of the vehicle he was driving. The male was stopped and issued a ticket for careless driving and a second ticket for having an expired sticker on his license plate. Careless driving carries a fine of $490.00 and 6 demerit points.

Update: Habitat for Humanity Thefts

The Sarnia Police have identified five persons involved in thefts from Habitat for Humanity.

Four people have been arrested and charged in relation to thefts caught on surveillance video and a fifth person has been identified and charges are pending. On Monday September 14, 2015 the Sarnia Police Service released portions of video surveillance images capturing twelve individuals stealing from Habitat property. The investigating officers continue to receive tips and are confident more suspects will be identified and charged.

The four persons charged with theft under $5000.00 are Bettina Cummings, 35 years old, Andrew Scott-Westfield, 26 years old, Jennifer Traquair , age 33 years and Joshua Poolman age 33 years. All four suspects are from Sarnia.

Impaired Driver

On Sunday morning September 20, 2015 at about 5:30 a.m. a Sarnia Police officer stopped a car near Ontario and East Street. During conversation with the driver of the vehicle the officer detected the odour of alcohol and asked the driver to provide a roadside breath sample. The driver provided a sample which registered a “Fail” and the 58 year old male accused was taken to the police station. Further breath samples indicated the man was over twice the legal limit to drive.

Kenneth Tate of Sarnia is charged with driving with over the legal limit.

Man Arrested for Theft of Tools

The Sarnia Police Service has arrested a man for a theft caught on video earlier this month.

On September 1, 2015 Sarnia Police released video surveillance depicting a male suspect parking a Ford Edge beside a pickup truck parked at a business in the 900 block of Murphy road. The suspect then calmly began unloading tools from the pickup truck and loading them into the Ford Edge.

Acting on information from the public, Uniform Patrol officers arrested a 40 year old Sarnia man for the theft of the tools on Saturday September 19, 2015 just before 9:30 a.m. In addition to recovering some of the stolen tools, officer’s also recovered the Ford Edge, which had been reported stolen on August 24, 2015 from the YMCA parking lot. The plates on the vehicle had been reported stolen September 2, 2015 from a Sandy Lane parking lot.

Jose Manuel DEMELO faces charges including possession of stolen property over $5000.00, two counts of possession of stolen property under $5000.00 and breach of probation.

Another Arrest for Habitat Thefts

Sarnia Police have arrested and charged a 33 year old Sarnia man for thefts from Habitat for Humanity.

The man was identified from video surveillance images that were released earlier this month by Sarnia Police in an attempt to identify twelve suspects stealing from the charity organization. With the public’s help Sarnia Police have been able to identify and charge five of the suspects.

Michael THOMSON has been charged with two counts of theft under $5000.00

Thefts From Cars

Just after 7:00 a.m. this morning September 22, 2015 a homeowner left his house on Felix Street to get into his truck. The homeowner noticed someone in his truck rummaging through the glove box. With the help of a neighbor the suspect was held until police arrived.

A 25 year old Sarnia man was arrested and charged with theft under $5000.00, possession of break and enter tools and breach of probation. The man is being held pending a bail hearing.

Police are asking anyone living on Felix Street or the surrounding area to check their vehicles and report any thefts. Please contact the investigating officer Constable Al Billings at 519-344-8861 extension 6084.

MVC Leads to Impaired Charges and Fail to Report

On September 22, 2015 at approximately 6:45pm, the Sarnia Police Service was contacted regarding a collision involving a vehicle striking two parked cars in the area of Russell Street and Ross Avenue in the City of Sarnia and failed to remain at the scene of the collision. While investigating the collision witnesses at the scene were able to point out to the officer the vehicle that caused the damage driving by.

The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle and stop it. It was noted that the vehicle had damage to it and was being driven by a lone female. The officer was able to determine from the physical signs of the female driver that she was impaired by alcohol. She was subsequently arrested for impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The 46 year old female from Sarnia provided two breath samples and she was twice over the legal limit.

The accused was also charged with over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and failing to report collision under the Highway Traffic Act.

Sting Appreciation Night for 911

Theft of Copper Tubing

The Sarnia Police Service is reaching out to the community for their assistance regarding the theft of a large quantity of copper tubing.

Sometime between September 11 and September 14, 2015 a number of copper tubes and copper elbow joints were stolen from the maintenance room of an apartment building located on Sandy Lane in the City of Sarnia. The suspects hand tampered with the interior entry door of the maintenance room as so no one could enter from the inside of the building and it is believed the suspects used the exterior door to remove the piping.

The pipes were time stamped with a date of “04/14/15″ and with a time range from 13:48 to 13:55. The diameter of the copper tubing was ¾” and the copper metal type was “L” making it a higher end metal. A picture below shows the time stamps.

Violent Encounter with Police

On September 28, 2015 just before 3:00 p.m. Sarnia Police responded to a call of a suspicious person on Davis Street.

Officers located a 29 year old male seated in a parked car in the 400 block of Davis Street. The male was very agitated and officers noted that there was a hatchet, a hammer and a knife on the seat beside the man. Officers asked the man to get out of the car fearing he could drive away, as the man exited the car he grabbed the hammer. A second officer was able to get the hammer away from him and the man then charged at the police yelling that he wanted to be shot. The officers were able to physically subdue the man and arrest him. During a search of the man officers located 26 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine and several more knives.

The man is facing charges including assault police with a weapon, assault police, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon and two counts of breaching his bail.

Busy Thursday for Police

The Sarnia Police Service had a busier than normal day on Thursday October 1, 2015 with officers handling 106 calls for service. Officers also arrested 11 persons for various criminal offences. The majority of the arrests were related to drugs, breach of bail and failure to comply with probation conditions.

Just before noon officers arrested a 32 year old female on an outstanding breach of probation warrant. During a search officers located approximately three and a half grams of crystal methamphetamine and 225 units of Hydromorphone. The combined street value of the drugs is estimated to be $575.00.She is being held pending a bail hearing and faces charges including 2 counts possession of a controlled substance and three counts of breach of probation.

Around midnight officers stopped a 30 year old man for driving offences and discovered he was a suspended driver. The man was arrested and when officers searched him they located just over eight grams of crystal methamphetamine and a small amount of marihuana. The street value is estimated to be just over $800.00. The man is being held for a bail hearing and faces charges including possession of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Just before 8:00p.m. Vice officers executed a search warrant in the 400 block of Devine Street and arrested two men aged 32 and 34 years. Police seized 331 gram of marihuana and evidence of trafficking. Also located was a shotgun, a .22 caliber rifle, a 30.30 caliber rifle, ammunition , a prohibited knife and approximately $2300.00 cash. The drugs had an estimated street value of $3310.00.

The 34 year old man is being held for a bail hearing and faces charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, ten counts of possession of a weapon while prohibited, possession of a prohibited weapon, and careless storage of a firearm.

The 32 year old man is also being held for a bail hearing and faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm and careless storage of a firearm.

Couple Arrested

On Sunday October 4, 2015, at about 3:00p.m., Sarnia Police officers were arresting a 26 year old male for being unlawfully at large. The man was found in the area of Cameron Street and East Street accompanied by a 26 year old woman. The male identified himself with an incorrect name and resisted while being arrested. The woman with him began yelling at police to let the man go and then began trying to pull the man away from police. The woman was told not to interfere and then she struck one officer in the face. As she was being arrested she started to kick the officers’ shin.

The couple is being held for bail hearings and the woman faces charges of obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a police officer. The male faces charges of public mischief, resist arrest and two counts of breach of probation.

Suspicious Device Investigated

Sarnia Police responded to a report of a suspicious device in the area of Afton Court just after 8:30 a.m. this morning.

After locating the device, officers began to evacuate nearby residents as a precaution. The Ontario Provincial Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EODU) from London was contacted and was responding. However Sarnia Police Criminal Investigators quickly discovered that the device (pictured below) was in fact a homemade oil lamp, and presented no danger to the public. The maker of the lamp was cautioned regarding leaving the device in public view.

VICE UNIT DRUG SEIZURE

During the early evening hours on October 8, 2015 the Sarnia Police Service Vice Unit conducted a motor vehicle stop in the City of Sarnia in which two males were arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking of methamphetamine.

 
 

A further investigation concluded with a Controlled Drug and Substances Act search warrant being executed by the Sarnia Police Service Vice Unit in the 1600 Block of London Rd that resulted in the following.

 
 

Total drugs seized 7 x 100 mcg patches fentanyl $ 2,800.00

80 grams methamphetamine $ 9,600.00

1 30 mg hydromorph contin pill $ 60.00

586 grams of marihuana $ 5,860.00

 
 

Total street value of drugs seized $ 18,320.00

 
 

Both males are being held for bail hearings.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Charges

Date: October 13, 2015

Sarnia Police Uniform Patrol officers charged three adult males for various offences after conducting a traffic stop on Saturday October 10, 2015.

Just before 9:00 p.m. the officers stopped the car on Carlton Place for a traffic violation. It was discovered the plates did not belong on the vehicle and that the car was not registered to any of the three males in the car. The 26 year old driver was arrested for traffic violations and an 18 year old passenger was arrested for an outstanding warrant from Windsor. All three males were also on terms of probation. While dealing with the occupants of the car the officers noted signs of controlled substances and conducted a search of the vehicle.

The search revealed just over 26 grams of methamphetamine and about 4 grams of marihuana. The combined street value of the drugs is estimated to be $3,440.00. All three males, including a second 21 year old passenger, were charged and are in custody awaiting bail hearings. They face charges including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and breaching their probation.
