Halloween Safety Tips for 2021

$

Broadcast time: 2:10pm

Date: October 28, 2021

The Sarnia Police Service would like everyone to be safe and have fun this Halloween. Please be respectful and responsible whether you’re out trick-or-treating, staying home or driving around the city. The following tips are annual reminders for Halloween safety.

1. Slow down!!! All drivers need to significantly reduce their speed on Halloween. Please remember, there will be numerous kids running across neighbourhood streets focused on one thing…candy! Expect an increase of pedestrian traffic on city streets, and because of the excitement of Halloween, they may not be paying attention to vehicle traffic.

2. Children should walk, not run from house to house. Avoid “Zig-Zagging” by staying on the sidewalk or at the side of the road facing traffic, cross the road at the corner and always look both ways before crossing the road.

3. When approaching the door, avoid tripping hazards by not running across front yards or over any landscaped areas. Use paved pathways whenever possible.

4. Make your home safe for trick-or-treaters. Remove all objects around your house that could cause children to trip or fall. Turn your outside light on so children will know they can visit your home. Do not feel obligated to answer your door if you do not feel safe.

5. Children should stay in known, well-lit areas and should only visit homes that have their outside lights on. Children should never go inside homes or cars. Do not go anywhere with a stranger.

6. Choose brightly coloured clothing that will be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility, carry a flashlight and add retro-reflective tape to the costume.

7. Halloween can be a chilly night so make sure costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm clothing. Make sure clothing is not so baggy or long that trick or treaters can trip over their costumes.

8. Make-up and face paint are better than wearing a mask which can restrict breathing and/or vision. If you choose a mask, make sure it allows the child to see and breathe easily.

9. Look for costumes, beards and wigs labeled “flame resistant” nylon or heavy weight polyester costumes are best. Flame resistant does not mean “fire proof”. Avoid costumes with baggy sleeves or flowing skirts to minimize the risk of contact with candles and other fire sources.

10. Keep candles, jack-o-lanterns, matches and lighters in a safe place that children cannot reach.

11 Swords, knives, and similar accessories should be made of soft, flexible material.

12. Tell your children not to eat any goodies until you see them. Make sure your child eats dinner or has a snack before they go out so they’ll be less tempted to eat their candy along the way.

13. Examine treats before you eat them! Goodies are the best part of Halloween, but before your children begin to eat their loot, make sure you examine it first. Throw out any treats that are not wrapped including those in torn or loose packages. Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discolouration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious. If you find something that has been tampered with, please contact police.

Note: The Sarnia Police Service has a limited number of retro-reflective wristbands available at our front foyer for anyone wishing to add a piece of reflective material to their costume. These snap bracelets are free of charge and have been generously donated by several local businesses working in partnership with The Community Safety Net (CSN).

The Community Safety Net is a family-run, values-oriented organization that produces a series of educational safety resources created especially for kids. To date, millions of children in communities across North America have benefited from CSN materials

Broadcast time: 3:00pm

Date: November 1, 2021

Two males were recently charged with Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample just hours apart from each other.

On Friday, October 29th, 2021 just prior to 12:15am, Sarnia Police investigated a collision which had just taken place at the intersection of Brock Street North and George Street. During the investigation, a breath demand was read to one driver who admitted to alcohol consumption. The driver refused to provide a proper breath sample and refused to cooperate with the officer’s instructions. The driver in this case also resisted arrest when officers attempted to handcuff him and place in the cruiser.

As a result, 41 year old, Steele Leacock of Camlachie, Ontario was charged with Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample and Resisting Arrest.

On this same day, at approximately 2:40am, a local taxi driver dropped off a fare in the 1300 block of London Road and then noticed this male walking over to a parked vehicle. The cab driver had detected a strong odour of alcohol on this male and, after observing him enter this vehicle and quickly drive away, the incident was immediately reported to police. While the information was being relayed, an officer who was nearby observed this vehicle travelling westbound on London Road at a high rate of speed. After making a U-turn, the officer followed the vehicle into the parking lot of the London Road Shopping Centre. After attempting to evade police in the parking lot, the driver found himself cornered and eventually came to a safe stop.

This driver showed obvious signs of impairment and was arrested accordingly. He was then transported to Sarnia Police Headquarters for breath testing where he refused to provide two valid breath samples.

As a result, 24 year old, Jonathan Daniel Whitton of Sarnia, Ontario was charged with Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired by Alcohol and also charged with Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample.

It should be noted that Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample upon a lawful demand carries the same penalties as Impaired Driving. Both drivers in this case had their driver’s licences immediately suspended for 90 days and their vehicles were towed and held for 7 days. Both drivers will have to appear in court at a later date to face additional consequences upon conviction.

12:55 PM

Date: November 9, 2021

Earlier this morning an initial news release was put out regarding two south east Asian females going door to door, selling chocolates for some unknown charity in the Philippines, and they were associated to a black SUV. There were also concerns that they may be linked to some criminal activity.

Members of the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigation Branch have looked into the matter further and determined that these individuals and other affiliates have been stopped by police in various cities and towns across the province. From the information gathered it appears that these individuals were indeed selling chocolates for a charity. No evidence of any crime being committed was ever found.

Driver Attempts to Flee From Police

$

Broadcast time: 12:50 PM Date: November 22, 2021

On November 21, 2021, at approximately 2:50 AM, an officer on patrol observed a motor vehicle traveling eastbound on Richard Street approaching Stuart Street. The vehicle failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection and turned left onto Stuart Street. The vehicle proceeded northbound on Stuart Street failing to stop at another stop sign at the intersection of Stuart Street and Talfourd Street and proceeded through the intersection at a high rate of speed.

As the officer was about to stop the suspect vehicle it pulled into an address on Stuart Street. The officer activated the cruiser’s emergency lights and parked the cruiser at the end of the driveway. As the officer approached the driver’s side window he observed that the driver was still present in the vehicle and noted the driver was looking directly at him. The driver did not open his door or window and nor did the suspect follow any of the instructions delivered by the officer.

The driver then began to back out of the driveway and when realizing that the cruiser was there, cranked the wheels to vehicle to the left to drive out across the lawn to flee from police. At this point the officer was required to maneuver himself and take action to avoid being struck by the vehicle as it fled away. As the vehicle drove across the lawn, it tore up the grass causing ruts to the ground.

Fortunately, the officer was able to take down the licence plate number and attended the address to which the vehicle was registered to. The vehicle was located at this address which was in the 100 block of Forsyth Street. Officers attended the residence and located the driver. Without any further incident, the suspect was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.

The accused in this matter, Andrew Lloyd Durston, 29 years of age, faces the following charges:

1) One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

2) One count of flight from a peace officer

3) Failing to comply with a release order

4) Failing to comply with probation order

5) Mischief under $5000

Durston remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing
