Just before 9:00 am today an 86 year old lady was in front of 201 North Front Street waiting to be picked up to head away for the weekend. She had her belongings in a suitcase on the sidewalk while she waited. A 36 year old male rode by on his bicycle grabbed her suitcase and rode away. The lady ran to a nearby business and called 911. Before the call was dispatched she spotted Community Services officers assisting with Art Walk traffic control and flagged them down. The officers broadcasted the suspect’s description over the police radio and COPPS officers in the area indicated that they had just seen a male known to them riding a bicycle with some type of bag on the handle bars. Two Inspectors, one of who just received his 30 year Exemplary Service Medal today, were heading downtown when they spotted the suspect and arrested him. The property was recovered and returned to the lady who could now continue on her weekend getaway.
The 36 year old Sarnia man will appear for a bail hearing later today and is charged with theft and two counts of breaching his probation.
