Sarnia Police are advising people to beware of a common phone scam that has victimized a local man.
A local man in his 80′s received a telephone call from someone claiming he was the victim’s son. He told the victim he had been in a car accident in Montreal while driving a rental car with no insurance. The caller asked for money to pay for a fine and some other expenses. The money was sent and the next day the victim received another call asking for more money to pay for a second fine for driving while impaired. Over the next few days the victim received more calls requesting money, one call was another man claiming to be a lawyer acting for the “son “and requested a lawyers fee. The victim sent a total of $15,000.00.
This is a common phone scam and the public is encouraged to speak with family members who may be victimized by this scam. The scammers will stress the urgency of the situation and the need to keep quite. Anyone getting a call of this nature should do some checking to confirm the caller’s story.
