The Sarnia Police Service is encouraging parents to speak to their children regarding used syringes.

The Service is investigating an incident where a Grade 5 student located a used syringe and may have pricked herself when picking it up. The syringe was found on Durand Street and this is not the first occurrence for that area in recent weeks.

Parents should speak to children of all ages about the dangers of used needles. Children should be advised to tell an adult if they find syringes. These syringes may still have product in them or carry a blood borne disease from the person who last used it.

People who use syringes for a legitimate medical use are reminded to dispose of their syringes properly.

Lambton Public Health offers these tips to dispose of syringes:

Pick the syringe up by the middle of the syringe avoiding the plunger and needle portion,

Place the syringe in a hard container such as a water bottle or pop can,

This can be taken to Lambton Public Health at 160 Exmouth Street.

If you locate syringes and are unsure of methods of disposal please contact the Sarnia Police at 519-344-8861
