Recently the Sarnia Police Service has received complaints of people receiving calls alleging that their grandchild or child has been charged and needs money for a lawyer or to get out of court. This has not been exclusive to Sarnia but also other parts of Ontario.

The scammer may say they are a lawyer representing the individual and that if they wish legal representation they need to pay several thousand dollars immediately. There are a number of variations of this scam but all have the same outcome.

We ask that you immediately hang-up and not give them any information or money. If you are truly concerned for your loved one make attempts to call them yourself.

Keep in mind that the courts will not ask for immediate payment of money my sending someone to pick up a wire transfer from you.

Also, talk to anyone you feel may be susceptible to this scam and warn them not to acknowledge anything of this nature.

These scam artists may sound very credible but that’s what they do. This is not a new scam and has been around for many years.

If you have not given out any information or lost any money you do not need to call the police. All you need to do is just hang—up.

Please realize that they are playing off people’s fears to take advantage of them for their money.
