On Saturday, May 21, 2022, at approximately 6:30 AM, the Sarnia Police Service received a complaint from a concerned citizen regarding an individual in possession of what was believed to be a sawed-off shotgun. This was observed in the backyard of a residence in the 500 block of George Street. Apparently there were a number of people present at some sort of party.
Due to safety concerns the police contained the area around the house with road officers and members of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
As a result, several individuals were taken into custody as they left the residence . Officers maintained containment and were able to call out the remaining individuals within the residence. Members of the ERT then made entry into the residence and cleared the house to ensure there was no one else present.
A warrant was requested by members of the Criminal Investigation Division to enter the house and search for a possible firearm. Once the warrant was granted, later that day, the search was conducted and officers located a replica firearm that did not function.
As a result, all those that were taken into custody were released unconditionally except for a 46-year-old male who was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
We would like to remind the public that carrying a firearm around in public view, whether real or not, will raise fear. Unfortunately, some of these replica firearms mimic real firearms and from a distance one cannot tell the difference. We as police will always treat these complaints as serious until proven otherwise.
If you must transport a replica firearm please do so in a concealed fashion (ie case or gym bag). Please to not carry it openly or in your pant waist band for it only draws negative attention.
