On March 23, 2022, shortly after midnight, members of the Sarnia Police Service were dispatched to a disturbance in the 1000 block of Tashmoo Avenue.
When officers arrived they did not note any sort of disturbance but needed to confirm the welfare of anyone present. As officers continued their investigation a door knock was conducted. After knocking several times and before officers could say anything, they were confronted by an irate man at the door yelling at them to leave.
Officers attempted to explain to the individual the reason for their attendance and their responsibility to confirm that all persons present were safe. Officers continued to clarify their reason for being there but the man continued to yell at them and refused to allow officers admission to confirm everyone’s well-being. After a number of minutes the officers realized that both the man and female, that was observed inside the building, did not have any injuries and were not being co-operative, thus the officers made the decision to leave and avoid escalating the situation.
As the officers returned to their vehicles and were about to leave the female came out with her hands up asking the officers to wait and why they were there. The man came out as well and was still upset. The officers used their flashlight to illuminate the male and the female. The male did not like the flashlight and marched back inside the residence this time returning with a firearm in hand. The man began waving the firearm around in a reckless manner. Officers immediately took cover, drew their firearms, and began yelling commands to drop the firearm.
The suspect continued to ignore the officers and actually began walking towards them. The female then intervened by yelling for the male to stop and pushed the male back knocking the firearm out of the man’s hands and to the ground. Officers began yelling at the man not to pick up gun, but instead, the male attempted to pick it up. Fortunately, the female who was still in proximity again pushed the man away from the gun. The man did not pick-up the firearm again but continued to be hostile towards officers and started to approach them again wanting to fight them.
Finally. Once the man was in close enough proximity, one of the officers deployed a Taser and was able to gain control of the suspect and place him under arrest.
The accused was then transported to Sarnia Police Headquarters
The accused, Mark Derek Nahmabin, 51 years of age, is now facing the following charges:
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Careless use of a firearm
Mark Nahmabin remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
