On Jan 6, 2021, at approximately 3:35 PM, a member of the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit was parked in the area of Talfourd Street and East Street when the officer could hear a vehicle approaching with the motor revving at a high rate.

The vehicle then immediately accelerated away at a high rate of speed.

The officer began to follow the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Talfourd Street and Russell Street. Before the officer could step out of the cruiser the driver left his vehicle and began to walk away attempting to avoid acknowledging the officer’s presence.

The officer was able to catch up to the driver on foot and based on the interactions and observations made, by the officer, the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The accused was transported to the Sarnia Police Headquarters where testing was conducted to determine the level of alcohol in the accused’s blood. Testing indicated that the accused was over twice the legal limit.

As a result, the accused, Clayton Norman Powers, 24 years of age, of Sarnia, faces one count of impaired by alcohol while operating a motor vehicle and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus.

Clayton Powers has been held pending a bail hearing.
