On May 26 and 27, 2021, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) joined together with the Sarnia Police Service to tackle identified issues on Alfred Street, Sandy Lane, Canatara Park, and the entrance to Canatara Park from Christina Street. This is an area where the two police services border each other.

Ongoing complaints of high-speeds, stunt driving, and improper vehicle modifications have been received in the area.

In total, 19 charges were issued during the operation which saw involvement from Sarnia Police Service members, Lambton County OPP members as well as members of the OPP’s Highway Safety Division (HSD)-London. The predominant number of charges laid were in relation to speeding.

As the warmer weather approaches and restrictions begin to be withdrawn an increase in vehicle, bicycle, and foot traffic will occur. We want everyone to enjoy the park by ensuring their safety and ask that people obey the posted speed limit signs in the area. Also, residents in the area should not half to put up with squealing tires and excessive noise.

Also, keep in mind that this is not exclusive to Canatara Park but all streets and public areas that motor vehicles have access to. As a driver your responsibility is to ensure that safety is paramount. It is to late once a collision occurs and someone is injured to take it back.

The area will see similar enforcement-focused initiatives involving the two police services over the next several months in hopes to educate drivers and enforce local traffic laws.
