The Sarnia Police Service continues to receive complaints and concerns regarding those who violate the Reopening Ontario Act. These complaints revolve around those who are congregating in groups and also local businesses that are opening up during this lockdown.
Recently, officers had warned the owners of The Leaky Tank Truckstop (eating establishment located on Degurse Drive) that they were in violation of the Reopening Ontario Act by remaining open and allowing in-house dining. Unfortunately, they continued to defy the warnings and were charged on May 4, 2021, and received a fine worth $880.00.
On May 1, 2021, protests again took place at Sarnia City Hall with people congregating. As a result, 24 tickets were issued under the Reopening Ontario Act, with a set fine of $880.00 each.
The Sarnia Police Service will first attempt to educate and warn individuals regarding their violation of the Act. Ultimately if people refuse to follow these laws then the only recourse left is to lay charges.
These measures are meant to protect everyone in the community from the spread of the COVID 19 virus until it is under control. We realize that these times have created hardships and challenges for many and we will continue to approach each incident with a measured and balanced approach. Our intent is to ensure everyone’s well-being by minimizing the spread of the COVID 19 virus. The hope is that we can all return to a normal way of life soon.
