On February 22, 2021, at approximately 1:00 PM, a member of the Sarnia Police Service Traffic Unit was travelling northbound on Waterworks Road just north of Michigan Avenue when he observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed heading southbound.
Upon observing this the officer activated his radar unit and locked the vehicle in travelling at 141 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. The officer immediately activated his emergency lights and was able to stop the vehicle without incident.
Due to the fact that the driver, a 67-year-old male, from Sarnia, was travelling 61 km/hr over the speed limit, he was charged under section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act for racing a motor vehicle – excessive speed (Stunt Driving).
The driver had his vehicle towed and impounded by police for seven days and also had his driver’s licence seized and suspended for 7 days.
The driver will be required to attend court to answer to the charge and if found guilty could face fines ranging from $2,000.00 to $10,000 as well as a further suspension of his driver’s licence.
We are asking those that feel that they do not have follow the posted speed limits or do not pay attention to the posted speed limits to remember that you are not only taking your life but also the lives of those around you for granted.
Posted speed limits are set to match the safety limits of the vehicle to the roads they are a travelling on. Once we disobey these limits the high rates of speed become an aggravating factor in the collision that could occur and increase the chance of a catastrophe occurring (death, severe injuries).
