On January 2, 2021, at approximately 1:00 PM, a Sarnia Police Officer, conducting radar enforcement, observed a pickup truck travelling eastbound on Wellington Street at a very high rate of speed. Once the officer activated his radar unit to obtain a reading it was determined that the vehicle was travelling 107 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone.
The officer was able to stop the pickup truck and upon doing so arrested the driver for “drive motor vehicle – speeding by 50 km/hr or more”. The driver had no identification on his person but provided a name verbally. As the officer continued to deal with the accused the officer formed grounds to demand that the accused supply a sample of breath into a roadside screening device. The test registered a fail.
The driver was then arrested for having over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The accused was then transported to the station where a qualified breath technician completed the testing of the accused and determined that the suspect had over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
The officer also determined that the initial name given was not who the accused said he was. After further investigating the matter the officer was able to determine the suspect’s true identity.
The accused, Patrick Albert Blais, 42 years of age, of London, was charged as follows:
- Blood alcohol concentration of 80 mg plus
- Personation with intent to avoid arrest
- Two counts of driving while under suspension
- Race a motor vehicle – excessive speed
The accused also had his motor vehicle impounded for 45 days and his licence was suspended for 90 days (ADLS)
