The Sarnia Police Service would like to advise the community that when shopping on-line with Marketplace, Kijiji or other similar platforms that the buyer beware.
A recent incident has drawn attention to the selling of gift cards on these platforms at a significantly discounted price. Please realize that there is a strong potential for these cards to be either fraudulent or stolen. Other cards need to be activated at the time of purchase and thus when stolen from the display may not be active.
Also, the merchant where these gift cards can be redeemed normally keeps a record of the issued card and invoice that it was sold under. Therefore, the card or certificate would be invalid and now you are in possession of either stolen property or a fraudulent document.
Please remember that when something looks like it is too good to be true it probably is!
