Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit Tackles Ongoing Community Problems

During the month of July, 2020, a local eating establishment, located in the 500 block of Christina Street North, had been experiencing various forms of ongoing vandalism.

Due to the escalation of incidents the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit began surveillance of the establishment. With the use of video surveillance cameras and actual surveillance by officers, it was determined who the suspect was.

On September 5, 2020, at approximately 8:00 PM, the alleged suspect, Terry Frank Perossa, 48 years of age, was arrested and charged as follows:

  1. Six counts of mischief
  2. One count of criminal harassment

In this matter the accused was known to the victim.

In a separate incident a local school bus company had been experiencing problems of theft from their compound. Thieves had been stealing bus batteries. On September 4, 2020, at approximately 11:30 PM, as part of regular checks to local businesses an officer from the COPPS Unit attended the area of the bus company’s compound to ensure all was in order. The COPPS Unit officer observed a wheelbarrow between buses full of batteries. The officer immediately contacted other officers to search the area.

Fortunately, the suspect was located hiding underneath a bus and was taken into custody without incident.

The accused in this case, Richard Gerald Young, 32 years of age, of Sarnia, faces the following charges:

  1. One count of theft over $5000
  2. One count of mischief over $5000
  3. One count of possession of break and enter instruments
  4. One count of break and enter.
