Over the years the very western end of Canatara Park beach, which has been named the Cove, has been a rapidly growing concern in regards to public complaints and negative activities. In 2019 the Sarnia Police responded to numerous calls regarding the Cove that pertained to everything from open alcohol, intoxicated people, fights, loud music and noises into the late hours of the night, trespassing, mischief, overdoses, and other issues.
These activities are a concern to the residents who live in the immediate area of the Cove, along with families and other individuals who attend that beach in hope of a safe and respectful environment.
Also, part of the Cove beach belongs to the apartments located on Sandy Lane and have caused issues with the residents pertaining to the concerns raised above.
911 First Responders experience difficulty accessing calls in a timely fashion involving overdoses, injuries, and other medical distress calls where every second matters. It is difficult to attend the scene because there is no local road way directly to the beach and because the terrain is difficult to traverse.
This year Sarnia Police officers from general patrol and the COPPS Unit, along with Sarnia By-Law officers, will be focusing their efforts to prevent these issues from happening. There will be an increased presence and a zero tolerance of any infractions that occur.
The City of Sarnia, along with Drewlo Holdings, will be working together to ensure that the area remains a respectful beach for all to attend and enjoy the sun and water. Drewlo Holdings have authorized the Sarnia Police Service to enforce any trespassing violations or other infractions on their property.
As of June 1st, 2020, the Sarnia Police Service has responded to seven calls to the Cove regarding open alcohol, and a call to assist paramedics regarding a male who was unconscious. Also, as of June 1st, 2020, eight tickets regarding open alcohol have been issued (each ticket was for $125.00). Please keep in mind that gatherings of more than five people is still prohibited under the Ontario Emergency Measures Act (which has been extended to June 19, 2020).
The Sarnia Police Service wish to ensure everyone’s safety and allow everyone the opportunity to enjoy our local public parks and beaches in a respectful manner for all who attend.
