Sarnia Police commenced an investigation on July 17, 2013 when they learned that someone had opened an account at a local electronics store using stolen identification. A 34 year old Sarnia man reported his wallet stolen on July 5. A 29 year old Sarnia attended the store on July 15 and opened an account using a stolen credit card and social insurance number. The suspect also presented identification with the victim’s name on it but his own photo.
On July 15, the suspect purchased three cellular telephones valued at about $699.00 each. The phones were purchased and a 36 month contract was signed by the suspect. This brought the purchase price of the phones down to $0.05 each but the monthly contract fee would be $45.00. On July 17, the suspect returned to the same store, met with the same clerk, and purchased two more phones. The values went down to $0.05 each as the earlier contract signed by the fraudster permitted him to purchase up to five phones in total.
The investigation revealed the suspect had put the new phones up for sale on a popular internet website. A contact number was provided if someone was interested in purchasing the merchandise. The phone number was that of one of the five illegally purchased cell phones.
The clerk was able to provide the police with a very detailed description of the suspect. As a result of that description, the man was identified. Police have issued a warrant for Adam Harvey Kargus, age 29, of Sarnia. He will face charges of Breach of Probation x 4, Breach of Recognizance, Fraud Under $5,000, Forgery, Identity Theft, Personation and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.
If you know where Kargus may be found, please call the Sarnia Police at 519-344-8861 or you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
ARRESTED July 23 around 4 PM.
