Today, the final Sunday in September, is recognized as the annual Canadian Police and Peace Officer National Memorial Day. It is a day to recognize the over 870 officers who have died in the line of duty and ensure that the magnitude of their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
At 1:00 pm today, at 140 Christina Street South, a special plaque dedication ceremony will be held to honour one such officer from Sarnia. On Victoria Day weekend in 1936, Jack Lewis, a Sarnia Police Officer died protecting the citizens of Sarnia at this location. This plaque will serve as a memorial to his ultimate sacrifice.
Everyone is invited to attend the plaque dedication. Christina Street will be closed in that area today to facilitate the honour guard and public interest.
In this photo, members of the Sarnia Police Service D Platoon lower the flag at the police station to half-mast in recognition of the National Police and Peace Officer Memorial Day and Jack Lewis, whose name is engraved in the glass panels of the Memorial in Ottawa, and as of today, on a plaque on Christina Street.
