Date: August 1, 2018

On July 12, 2018, nine rail cars were involved in a derailment where six cars ended up on their sides and 3 were leaning off the tracks in the CN rail yard in the area of the southern Indian Road overpass. No one was injured in the incident and no chemical or gas spills occurred. CN immediately dealt with the incident and also contacted Sarnia Fire to assist in the clearing of the cars.

On July 31, 2018 a de-briefing of the incident was hosted by the Sarnia Community Emergency Management Coordinator where officials from CN, CN Police, Transport Canada, The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Sarnia Fire, Sarnia Police Service, Sarnia City Hall, Mayor Mike Bradley and MP Marilyn Gladu were in attendance.

A review of the incident by the parties present concluded that what happened after the derailment was handled well and that at no time was the community’s safety at risk.

The one issue that arose and will be addressed in the future via training and any future incidents is to ensure effective communication amongst the involved agencies and with the community at large.
