On Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at approximately 12:40 pm, the Sarnia Police Service had received information that a pick-up truck that had been stolen from a company located in Plympton-Wyoming was currently in the City of Sarnia. Officers located the truck being driven by a loan suspect in the area of Christina Street and Michigan Avenue. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop of the vehicle with the cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens but upon doing so the truck began to speed away to evade the officer. Fortunately the officer was able to observe the driver and in doing so later identify him.
The stolen pick-up continued to evade the police by accelerating to speeds in access of 100km/hr on city streets and highway 402 with no concern of other vehicles or people. Due to the excessive speeds and concerns of public safety the pursuit of the stolen truck was shortly thereafter terminated.
At approximately 6:15 pm officers attended an address in the 300 block of Maxwell Street where the suspect was believed to be residing and were able to locate and arrest him without incident. Officers also located the stolen truck a short time later in the 800 block of Trillium Park.
The accused, Michael David Simmons, 48 years of age, from Sarnia, has been charged with:
- Flight while pursed by police
- Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
- Breach of his probation
