On May 7, 2018, an officer from the Sarnia Police Community Response Division was dispatched to the 200 block of Indian Road where the purchase of products at a local gas bar occurred with the use of a counterfeit $20 bill. Later that day the suspect attended a nearby grocery store to purchase a single bottle of pop with another counterfeit $20 bill and in turn received Canadian funds for change.
The suspect continued his spree, also on May 7, 2018, by purchasing fast food and paying for a taxi with fraudulent American $20 bills.
This investigation was then continued by the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigation Branch with the assistance of witnesses and security camera photos to determine that the accused was a Nicholas Matthew Brown (23 years of age), of Sarnia.
Brown was arrested and charged on May 22, 2018, with uttering counterfeit money, fraud under $5000, and breach of probation.
The Sarnia Police Service would like to remind the public to be vigilant when receiving funds and ensure that they are true. One can easily Google various websites for things to look for when receiving suspicious currency.
