On April 5, 2018, at approximately 12:10 pm, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit, while on patrol, observed a grey Mazda 3 on London Line in the City of Sarnia with an expired validation sticker. The officer conducted a traffic stop of the motor vehicle to deal with the expired permit.
The driver produced a Health Card as identification and from there the officer was able to determine that the driver was wanted on warrants out of Peel Region. As the officer was about to deal with the driver the vehicle fled the area heading southbound on Modeland Road and ran a red light at Wellington Road and Modeland Road. The vehicle was being driven in a manner that threatened public safety and thus the pursuit was terminated in the area of Confederation and Modeland Road.
After losing site of the vehicle, the officer was able to re-locate the vehicle parked at a plaza in the area of Trudeau Drive and Confederation. Police were able to set up a perimeter and the assistance of OPP Canine was also requested.
The suspect was located hiding under a barbeque cover behind a town house on Turner Drive. He was taken into police custody with no further incident at approximately 1:00 pm.
The accused, Jeremy Kandhai, 23 years of age, of North York, Ontario, remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
Kandhai has been charged with failing to comply with his recognizance, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resist a peace officer, and flight while being pursued by a peace officer.
